Tom Ford closed New York Fashion Week by presenting his latest Spring Summer 2023 collection for women and men. A glamorous show filled the room with celebrities such as Madonne, Erykah Badu, Katie Holmes and Chris Rock. Holmes, looking as stylish as ever, wore a black long-sleeved hooded dress by Tom Ford, while Rock kept things fresh with a classic leather biker jacket by Tom Ford.

The collections showcased what Tom Ford does best, exploring a sleek form of sex appeal. The runway was an explosion of leather, lurex and silk: lace lingerie turned daywear alongside metallic and gold and leather jackets, bralettes with low-waisted leather pants and party dresses with thigh-high slits and cut-outs. The show also screened at the Hemsley Building in Manhattan.

The runway show was divided into three: daytime looks, party looks and after-dinner looks. First, we saw Tom Ford’s version of sportswear: disco shorts in black and silver, belts, low-cut trucker suits in lilac. Second, the show was pencil skirt and low-cut blouse, his most beloved style from the 70s, which made him a hit at Gucci in the 90s.

Also, among the sea of bold colors and shimmering sequins, was the bold use of animal prints, a true 80’s fashion statement. Even with the eclectic nature of the collection, the launch didn’t stray too far from the designer’s signature pieces and the usual design staples, such as the classic Tom Ford tuxedo.

Men’s fashion was a bit quieter, albeit with a bold interpretation. Conventional black was joined with a nod to Valentino’s hot pink, as archetypal suits were enhanced with sleek lines, subdued patterns and the occasional metallic fabric. Textures were used meticulously throughout the collection with shiny leather, delicate embroidery and a plethora of sequins to add movement and glamour to vintage-inspired silhouettes.

Skin-baring mesh and lace added a sensual feel to blouses, skirts and lingerie, while conversely, matching ensembles provided unpretentious style and silky jumpsuits cascaded down the body in a modest yet sensual way.

Unfortunately, in what has been an otherwise diverse and sustainable fashion week in New York, Tom Ford’s show was noticeably lacking in body diversity. Plus-sized models Paloma Elsesser, Devyn Garcia and Precious Lee have been on virtually every other catwalk except this one.
