Schiaparelli Returned to the Couture Runway with a Surreal Collection

Daniel Roseberry continued to blend cultures in his couture collection for Maison Schiaparelli’s Spring/Summer 2022 show.

Maison Schiaparelli’s Spring/Summer 2022 Haute Couture show at Paris Fashion Week is a refreshing perspective on what the fashion world needs in this time of uncertainty. Daniel Roseberry approached his Paris Fashion Week runway show intending to find an appropriate place for fashion amidst the chaos and the pandemic.

Titled An Age of Discipline, Roseberry created a drama-filled collection without the bold colours and oversized silhouettes one would expect. Instead, Roseberry was inspired only on three colours: black, white and Maison Schiaparelli’s signature gold.

Inspired by a “mythical holy priestess,” Roseberry’s latest collection is the definition of elegantly understated luxury. The collection is filled with simple, tailored silhouettes paired with elaborate and highly detailed golden structures. The effect is ethereal and magical: the juxtaposition between simplicity and complexity is truly enchanting.

“I definitely didn’t want to do anything ‘fluffy,’ as I think a lot of people expect from couture,” she said.

For their part, the accessories adopted a monochromatic, puritanical colour scheme. The star of the show was the eye-catching Medusa dress, made of gold leather and adorned with precious stones from the 1930s.

There were large circular hats that resembled planetary rings; crystal-encrusted gold gloves that trailed up the models’ hands like precious grasses; and celestial headdresses dotted throughout the 23 looks, which oozed surrealism.
