The luxury label honours its history with Hollywood for its Cruise 2024 collection.

Chanel made a grand return to Los Angeles on May 9, after 16 years since its 2007 Cruise collection was presented at Santa Monica Airport under the leadership of Karl Lagerfeld. “This show is an opportunity for the house to celebrate its connections to the City of Angels.” An ode to the playful glamour of Los Angeles, the Resort 2024 collection showcased the best of the silhouettes on the runway, which was a combination of cool aesthetics with a touch of the best high-end charm.
It was almost fitting that instead of one of Los Angeles’ natural scenic landscapes or architectural landmarks, Chanel chose to stage the show on a set of its own creation behind the towering gates of Paramount Pictures Studios. The set itself was dominated by a large movie screen, while the runway resembled a basketball court, which later served as the skating rink for the exclusive after-party. As the models walked the runway, the film’s backdrop showed the Los Angeles skyline and beach, before Alma Jodorowsky’s feature film appeared. A marker announcing the start of the Chanel runway show appeared in front of the audience and included a luxury attendance, from Margot Robbie, Kristen Stewart, and Marion Cottilard to Paris Hilton, everyone was there.
“Between a tribute to the glamour of the great stars of cinema and evoking the world of fun that is lived with aerobics, sport and roller skating, between the dream on the one hand and what you want to wear on the other, it’s all about balance, “says Virginie Viard.

Viard references a nostalgic and optimistic image of Los Angeles: the surfers and peace-promoting hippies of the 1960s, the disco-dancing skaters of the 1970s and the Jane Fonda-loving aerobics enthusiasts of the 1980s, in particular. The collection became more colourful and eye-catching as the show progressed, with a plethora of sleek beachwear styles. Eye-catchers included knotted tie-dye bucket hats, seafoam green tracksuits, palm tree and sequin print jackets and jumpsuits, multicoloured chiffon dresses and an abundance of pink, which was seen in tweed mini skirts and jackets, shirt dresses, sandblasted polished shorts, sparkly jumpsuits and more.
Other standout silhouettes included a handful of sweaters, a shimmering trench dress and lightweight heels that rounded out the collection of disco-adjacent looks for day and night, perfect for making the most of precious luggage space on a glamorous weekend getaway. The runway also saw a variety of mixes with coastal and ombre hues, some abstract watercolour prints of skaters and billboard graphics embodying Virginie Viard’s fresh and cheerful take on California. “The idea is to offer a breath of fresh air, a journey, a cheerful and joyful fantasy,” Virginie concludes.
It wouldn’t be Hollywood without an A-list guest list, which included Paris Hilton, naturally, dressed in head-to-toe pink, and Kristen Stewart, her signature style a complete contrast to Hilton’s, showcased via an oversized monochromatic tweed suit. Not only was Chanel darling Margot Robbie there, but Emma Mackey and Issa Rae, Chloë Sevigny and Sofia Richie were also in attendance. Margaret Qualley, Halsey, and Leslie Mann and Iris Apatow were also spotted in the crowd, along with Lisa Rinna and Kris Jenner, both dressed head to toe in their Chanel pieces.

Elle Fanning attended the Chanel resort 2024 show in an ensemble from Chanel’s fall 2023 collection, which debuted at Paris Fashion Week. She wore black sequined pants with a sleeveless open-front top adorned with silver embellishments. She accessorized her outfit with a black jacket with a silver floral pattern.
