Nicolas Ghesquière’s new Fall/Winter 2023 collection for Louis Vuitton took place in the vaulted halls of the Musée d’Orsay. The creative designer presented a collection of garments with a bold charm, blending tradition and innovation. A fascinating story of French style embodied the essence of haute couture and ready-to-wear. The fashion show was presented with a set design by artist Philippe Parreno and production designer James Chinlund, who created an extraordinary atmosphere by perfectly reproducing the streets of Paris, including the typical sounds of the city and the crowd. Nicolas Becker was in charge of projecting the sound of footsteps through the space.

The designer’s retro-futuristic style, which has earned him a reputation as one of the most original creatives in the industry, demonstrated that his vision goes further and reinterprets a line that evokes Maison’s codes. “Louis Vuitton has always embodied for me the symbol of ultimate luxury, innovation and exploration. We share common values and a vision,” he commented.

The setting of the show, from the intense lighting to the natural sounds of the Parisian streets, gave strength to the models who presented different designs, demonstrating a great level of detail, as well as combinations of fabrics that highlighted the classic French charm of the fashion house.

“What is the French style? The question itself is an enigma that awakens an infinite fascination. An irresolute fashion that resides on an oxymoronic base of audacious tradition. An evolving fashion, like the palimpsest of multiple currents from everywhere, in which the conventions of haute couture embrace an astonishing mix of cultures to become what is known as the French exception. That style of ineffable magnetism that still intrigues the world: that too is paradoxical: sophistication with the air of a dilettante. French charm is a trompe l’oeil. The French touch never fails to captivate.” by Louis Vuitton.

Finally, a softer side of French dressing was revealed: thick pleated blazers belted and layered over dynamic, textured dresses, striped fabrics were blown up to massive proportions and layered over balloon pants and jackets, sculptural dresses came layered over thick tops and tailored long coats and red leather pants combined to create a new vision of creative director Nicolas Ghesquière’s twisted version of all things French.

The wool bustier dresses leaned slightly off-centre in one direction, in motion. “French charm is a trompe l’oeil,” said the program notes. “The French touch never fails to captivate. Louis Vuitton is a ship sailing through time, guided by the winds of savoir-faire, technique, discovery and artistic ideals.”

French fashion codes also prevailed through mixed prints and wonderfully random combinations, such as paisley and florals. The collection produced closet staples, including bright sunglasses for light therapy, biker gloves and two-tone boots for those who crave the wilder side of Ghesquière’s accessories.

Zendaya

Several celebrities, including Deepika Padukone, Zendaya, Emma Stone, Ana de Armas and more stars attended the fashion show. Pharrell Williams, who was recently named creative director of menswear for the house, also attended the show.

The brand’s newest ambassador, Zendaya stole the show, wearing a short tiger print outfit with a matching blazer. The “Euphoria” star paired her look with matching thigh-high boots and a monogrammed mini bag with matching gold jewellery.
